C hristmas M essages
by Pastor Troy Dearborn St Pierre Bible Fellowship Church C hristmas is an oddly musical time of year. Songs are often my first cue that we’re into the holiday season. Inevitably sometime late in November I’ll be at my local grocery store shopping list in hand, and that oh too familiar voice begins to reverberate through aisle eight as I reach for the eggnog, “all I want for Christmas is youuu”. Truly Mari- ah Carey has become a harbinger of the festive season. It’s a strange thing that every year, at the same time, we all start listening to our favou- rite playlists of Christmas music. What other holiday gets its own repertoire of songs? I sup- pose Canada Day has a song, birthdays also get a theme song, Thanksgiving doesn’t even have a single song, yet Christmas is full of end- less music. And it’s not just the classics, more and more artists release Christmas albums each and every year (I have yet to figure out whether releasing a Christmas album is a sign The first Christmas playlist
because they declare the significance of what God alone has done through the coming of Je- sus Christ. Perhaps the most interesting thing to me about these songs, is that they’re sung or re- ceived by entirely insignificant and unremark- able people; a teenage girl from a backwater town, blue-collar shepherds on the nightshift, or an elderly priest past his prime. These songs were not first sung by great emperors or kings, they weren’t heard by the influential stakeholders or power brokers of the day, they weren’t announced in the great palaces, colos- seums, or academies. As Mary’s song says, “God has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble,” and not because of what these peo- ple were able to contribute, or because they were exceptionally skilled, talented, or gifted. It was simply because they were receptive to a God at work in the hidden and unremarkable places of this world. A God who seeks out the outsider, who sees those who are unseen, who loves those who feel unlovely, who notices those who are overlooked, and redeems those who have failed. Christ’s free gift of grace is his own initiative, it cannot be earned or added to, it can only be received, celebrated, and shared (something music is particularly good at). So, what is left to do if God has done it all? I suppose singing songs of praise is a fitting place to start. So, I’ll add my normal, ordinary voice to the chorus of history and repeat the sounding joy of a God who “has come to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10).

The greatest story ever told
by Pastor Dylan Barkman Pansy Chapel A long, long time ago, before Noah ever built an ark, in a real place not far away, a prophecy was given that promised a res- cuer of humanity would one day come with the power to crush the head of evil. As the world began to decay under the bond- age it was in because of evil, Noah’s son Shem receives a blessing, highlighting his descen- dants as the chosen family of which the prom- ised rescuer would come. Several generations later, the well document- ed story comes into focus when God makes a promise to one of Shem’s descendants, a man named Abram. God promises him that of all the branches on the family tree so far, it would be through his descendants that the promised res- cuer from evil would come, causing everyone on the planet to be blessed. A few branches later in the same family tree
However, several kings later, the story takes a dark turn when David’s family line of kings is cursed and comes to an end. Then in a way that only God could design, a child, the divine rescuer is finally born, to par- ents, both of which are Shem’s descendants. And based on the differing genealogies of his birth, the royal lineage from the dynasty of King David is passed down to him through his supposed father, while it is through his virgin mother that the curse is bypassed. This is the story of none other than Jesus Christ, the promised rescuer of humanity that crushed the head of evil by laying down His life. However He rose to life again, witnessed by many, and lives on as the eternal living King who defines love and gives true joy, hope for eternity and purpose for life. This is the greatest story ever told, and testifies that God is a faith- ful, promise keeping God.
comes a man named Moses who rescues this, now large people group, from their bondage to slavery. This freedom foreshadows the coming rescuer of humanity, but the world continued to wait in anticipation for the true rescuer to come and crush the head of evil. And as Moses leads the people to freedom from physical bondage, God gives him instruc- tions for ceremonial laws that have a temporary effect of overcoming evil, delivering the people from spiritual bondage. This also foreshadows what the coming rescuer will accomplish, and anticipation mounts for his appearance. Generations later, to a King named David, another man of the same family line, God again narrows the focus of who the coming rescuer will be by promising that it will be one of Da- vid’s royal descendants. He is described as a human king who will reign eternally. A human- ly impossible prediction, that only someone who is both fully God and fully human could accomplish.
