ADVANCED EDUCATION

Is career and technical education important?

F ebruary is recognized as Ca- reer and Technical Education (CTE) Month in North Amer- ica. This month-long event high- lights the essential role CTE plays in shaping the future workforce, with programs offered at compre- hensive high schools, technical centers, community colleges and universities across the country. Ex- plore some of the reasons why CTE is vital. It helps students develop practical skills CTE programs help students bridge the gap between theoreti- cal knowledge and practical skills. These programs provide hands-on experience that directly translates to the workplace, equipping stu- dents to handle real-world chal- lenges from the start. It opens the door to various career paths Many CTE programs offer path- ways to fulfilling careers without a four-year college degree, provid- ing accessible options for students from all backgrounds. With numer- ous options appealing to diverse interests and talents, students can explore a variety of high-demand careers in industries such as health- care, technology, finance, tourism, marketing and skilled trades. It addresses skills shortages As industries evolve and new tech-

nologies emerge, CTE is becoming a key solution to the nation’s short- age of skilled workers in sectors like infrastructure, health care and

manufacturing. By training a skilled workforce, CTE contributes to com- munity development and national economic stability.

Finally, CTE not only prepares students for immediate employ- ment but also fosters a culture of lifelong learning and adaptability in

an ever-changing economy. To learn more, research career and technical education programs in your area.

A roadmap for campus resources for new college and university students

S tarting college or university is an exciting adventure but can be daunting, especially for new students. Fortunately, campuses have many resources to guide and support your academic journey. Here are just a few: 1. Academic support centres. Nav- igating the academic challenges of college life is easier with the support of tutoring centres, writing labs and academic advising offices. These re- sources help with course materials, study strategies and educational planning to help you excel. 2. Health and wellness services. Maintaining your physical and men-

College is more than just ac- ademics — it’s also about building connections and finding your com- munity. Join student organizations and clubs or help out at campus events to create a social network. Making friends develops leadership skills, and you’ll make lasting con- nections with your peers. Embrace these campus resources and remember that you’re not alone — your campus is filled with support systems to help you succeed.

tal health is essential for success. Take advantage of the campus gym and other health and wellness cen- tres that provide medical care, coun- selling services and programs to en- sure you thrive inside and outside the classroom. 3. Career services. Start planning for your future with the help of the campus career services office. They offer support with resume writing, job searching, internships and ca- reer development workshops to pre- pare you for life after graduation. 4. Library and technology resourc- es. How to make the right course choices at university

E very semester, you’re respon- sible for choosing university courses that meet the require- ments of your program of study. Here’s some advice to help you stay on track. Check your progress against the course path Your program description outlines compulsory courses and the total number of credits required to obtain your degree or diploma. It also speci- fies if you must complete a minimum number of courses in a specific con- centration. Take prerequisites into account You may be able to register for cer- tain courses only if you’ve completed earlier ones. Therefore, you may have to plan your course path several se- mesters ahead. The course descrip- tions include this information.

Avoid scheduling conflicts Most courses have classes sched- uled at specific times during the week. Make sure you don’t select two courses with classes that take place during the same time slots. Addition- ally, try to allow enough time in your schedule to study and complete as- signments. Stay up to date on registration timelines These periods are your only oppor- tunity to register for a course within a specific semester. You should also be aware of the deadlines to change, cancel or withdraw from courses without incurring penalties. Famil- iarize yourself with these dates to avoid missing one. Do you have any questions about your course load or study path? Talk with an academic adviser in your de- partment for reliable guidance.

5 great reasons to start tutoring right away

College programs to fit your life – flexible/custom learning schedules

T utoring allows your child to get help in one or more subjects throughout the school year. Here are five reasons to start tutoring right away. 1. It’s a chance to brush up on difficult con- cepts. A few tutoring sessions at the beginning of the school year can help your child review concepts they may have struggled with during the previous year to ensure they don’t fall be- hind. 2. Your child benefits from support at the right time. Large class sizes can make it diffi- cult for teachers to give each student the one- on-one attention they need. Tutoring is an ide- al way to work through the latest concepts at your child’s pace. 3. The length and frequency of the sessions can be personalized. Tutors often have flex-

ible schedules to suit your child’s needs. For instance, you can increase or decrease the fre- quency of the tutoring sessions based on what your child is struggling with and how they’re progressing throughout the school year. 4. Your child learns how to use educational tools. Tutoring teaches your child to use var- ious tools to help them succeed in school. It also encourages them to develop beneficial working methods such as discipline and orga- nization. 5. It can improve your child’s academic suc- cess. Your child quickly builds trust with their tutor but also improves their self-esteem and confidence in their own abilities. Look for tutoring services available in your area.
